As a nurse practitioner, you witness so many health issues that bring about health disparities to the elderly population. It has become a passion of mine to contribute in making a difference, bringing awareness to the world and helping to further research as well as policy changes. The past four years I have been the family advocate for the elderly instead of being the medical care provider. The more I learn about Alzheimer's since I embarked on this journey four years ago the more it has become a passion of mine. My inspiration for being a part of the Alzheimer's association and becoming an advocate is my mother Mary Ann Johnson. Mom was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia and Early Onset Alzheimer's Dementia. To witness a vibrant woman full of life becoming lifeless is heartbreaking. To know I work in healthcare and cannot even help my mom was a constant struggle for me. I did research and made sure mom was going to get the best chance for the best quality of care that can be provided. We were first able to stay at home for 2 years. Then mom became total care and more care was needed that could be given at home. Finding a facility that would meet her needs was the hardest thing for us. After researching Medicare plans, multiple neurologist appointments, geriatric psychiatrists, trials of different medications, inpatient hospital stays, medical costs, and several memory care facilities, we have found the one that is perfect for my mom to continue giving her the best quality of life. Mom gets 24-7 nursing care. Many nights I prayed and cried asking God why and wondering if I had the strength to continue even at times when I felt like I had done all I can do. God continues giving me the strength, resources and special angels to walk with me along this journey.

Psalms 138:3 "In the day when I cried out, you answered me, and made me bold with strength in my soul"

Alzheimer's is a disease that is becoming more and more prevalent in our community. By participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer's Disease you will help to provide 24-7 support to those affected by the different types of Dementia. I am raising awareness and funds to continue the fight against the disease, accelerate research and change policies. My family and others who face Alzheimer's and all other dementia types need us - and with your help, we can be there for them. Make a donation or register as a participant and come Groove with Mary J's (MaryAnn Johnson) team to end Alzheimer's disease. My mom loved dancing, her favorite group was Frankie Beverly and Maze, so of course the team will be grooving to mama's favorite hits! So come out and groove with us.

We thank you for support us and the cause!
