In 2003 I lost my sweet Granny Price to Alzheimers. That was one of the hardest things to experience, not her passing but her not knowing who I or anybody else in the family was years before she left us and watching her slowly forget how to do simple things in life like eat, walk, talk, and breathe. But through it all, she always had a smile on her face and deep down I know she knew who we were and she knew how much we loved her and that I was always Grannys little girl.
A few years after Granny P passed away, we found out her brother, Uncle Lucian, had Alzheimers. Once again, we were devastated and just kept asking why, why is this terrible illness taking our loved ones from us. After Uncle Lucian passed, I started donating money and walking in the Walk to End Alzheimers because my Granny and my Great Uncle should have never had to go through this and should be remembered for the amazing people they were and I wanted to do something to remember and honor them and the Walk in the perfect opportunity to do so.
A couple of years ago, we found out my Granny Collins was facing Alzheimers and it was absolutely heartbreaking to relive this nightmare and watch her slowly leave us just as my Granny P did. She knew who I was but she could not remember my name. She had a hard time talking and couldn't remember to do daily activities. I never thought she would end up with this terrible illness and she lost her battle on February 4th, 2019. This terrible illness is quickly taking more and more loved ones every day.
We also found out in 2017, my Aunt Brenda has dementia and she is my Granny Prices daughter, my Mom's sister. We are shocked once again that this terrible illness has again affected another precious family member. She has started taking medication to try to delay the illness and we just pray she can fight this and that there is a chance for a cure so she can live the rest of her life never forgetting and always remembering her life and her family who love her so very much.
These stories of my precious family members are the reason I walk and donate money to the Alzheimers Association. I am so afraid it will keep taking my family away from me and possibly me away from my family. Please consider donating and/or walking to help me remember my family and prevent this terrible illness from taking anybody else. If you have a friend or loved one affected by Alzheimers or Dementia, please donate and/or walk for them or in their honor. Together we can win the fight to End Alzheimers.
