Ten years ago, we lost my beloved stepmother, Jane Connor Hale, to early onset dementia. She was only 65, just ten years older than I am today. Although she wasn't my biological mother, Jane was a tremendous influence in my life, and one of the best people I ever knew. I wouldn't be the person I am today without her. To witness her suffering from the effects of dementia at an early age was truly heartbreaking. I miss her every day.
My father, Dan Hale, has been diagnosed with dementia, after losing his wife of nearly forty years to this disease. I am so lucky to have one of the coolest dads on the planet! He and Jane taught me the importance of treating all people equally and with respect, to care for the planet, and to stand up to injustice in all forms. Dad is a music lover, a fan of the outdoors, and a brilliant attorney.
Dad is still fairly early in his disease progression, and while it has brought changes and challenges, I hold on to the hope that a cure is within reach.
I walk in support of my father and in memory of Jane, and with the hope that we someday soon find a cure to prevent others and their families from suffering from this cruel disease.
By participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, I’m raising awareness and funds to advance the fight against this disease — funds that allow the Alzheimer’s Association to provide 24/7 care and support while accelerating critical research.
Families facing Alzheimer’s and all other dementia need us — and with your help, we can be there for them. Please make a donation or register as a participant and start your own fundraising efforts. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s disease.
Thank you for your support!
