After nearly 10 years working in secured memory care, I’ve personally cared for and said goodbye to over 150 people suffering from dementia. I find deep joy and pride in the work I’m called to do, and am given the gift of seeing the truest testaments of love in this field, but at the end of it all, I’m heartbroken and angry. Metaphorically speaking, I feel like I spend my time passing out life preservers for comfort, while we all know there is no rescue in sight. My work with the Alzheimer’s Association feel like I’m partaking in building a boat. I walk in honor of those I’ve cared for, in solidarity with those currently suffering, and in action to lead the way towards Alzheimer’s first survivor.
