This year I am walking for my mom who passed away July 8, 2019 from Alzheimer's and vascular dementia. My mom was a teacher for years and changed the lives of countless individuals. She used to run a food program to ensure that no one on the Big Island was ever hungry. She was a God fearing prayer warrior. Now this awful disease changed her life and the lives of my family forever. It was sad to see her struggle with words and not know her children.
I am also volunteering as the Community Engagement Chair for this year's walk. I really believe in this cause. The numbers are staggering and continue to rise. Finding a cure is not just for the elderly either - have you ever heard of Early Onset Alzheimer's? It is not very common, but is becoming more so everyday. Young people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s are developing Alzheimer's. This needs to end! The Alzheimer's Association spends 77% of the money raised on research, education, advocacy, and care for those with Alzheimer's and their caregivers, bringing vital programs to those who need it the most.
I am hoping that one day this walk will no longer be needed because Alzheimer's will be only a memory. Please help me fight to find the first survivor. I want to hold a white flower one day at a Walk! Join me - donate, start a team, or start fundraising yourself! Every person and every dollar makes a difference.
Thank you for joining the movement!
