This is not my first year walking this walk or supporting this cause.
I have personally been affected by this disease in many ways. I have been a friend, a family caregiver, a home health hospice aid, and a family member to those with this disease.
Every single person I have known with this disease have all been so very different! But what I can say is that it robs you and the person diagnosed of everything that made them themselves and it’s a truly horrible experience all around.
This year is different for me because I will be doing this in my mom’s honor and memory.
My mom, Jayne Williams Pellicano, ended her battle with dementia/ Alzheimer’s disease April 15,2024 at age 63.
She was diagnosed with dementia in 2019, after the stress of being a caregiver and losing her very best friend and mother, my Gramall, Bonnie Williams to this disease June 18,2019.
My mom believed in this walk and hoped for a cure! she and I walked it together several years honoring family and friends we had who were effected by it.
She was also known for how much she loved to walk. She walked every single day around our neighborhood with friends.
I can not think of a better way to honor her and keep fighting for a cure for this terrible disease.
This year I am honoring several near and dear to my heart who were diagnosed and battled this disease: I ask for prayers for all the families and friends who mourn the loss of them every day, and also for prayers for those still battling and the families and friends caring for them.
Shirley Goodwin “Nanny” - my Nanny in heaven
Macon Clark - my childhood best friend, Kat Clark’s father in heaven
Bonnie Williams “Gramall”- my Gram in heaven
Jayne Williams Pellicano- my mom in heaven
Jackie Miller “Memaw”- my long time church family member and friend, she is still battling the fight against Alzheimer’s and I am honored to be one of her caregivers. She is a wonderful joyful person who is living on home hospice surrounded by the love and care of her family, especially her grandchild Taylor who she lives with.
Ronny Terry- my mom’s sisters brother in law, still battling the fight against Alzheimer’s. My mom walked in his honor with his name on her flower several years. He is still traveling, trying to make the most memories with his family that he can.
Families facing Alzheimer’s and all other dementia need us — and with your help, we can be part of fighting for the very first survivor of this awful disease!
