Our story is like many, we've lost five family members to Alzheimers and other dementias, losing Joe’s dad Warren in November 2023. Dad suffered from vascular dementia, as did Uncle Victor who we lost in 2020. We began walking in 2018 to honor Aunt Sarah, Nonna Nicolina and Nicki's mom Mary who we lost to Alzheimers disease. Since that time, we have raised more than $19,000, thanks to our generous family and friends,
We continue to walk to honor them and their caregivers and because we see so much progress in research and treatments. We are now in the Era of Treatment! That's right, there is now two FDA approved medications that help delay the progression of the disease for some people in early stages of dementia! It is not a cure (yet), but to those who have benefitted from these new treatments, it is priceless to have more time with their loved ones and participate in decisions after a diagnosis. And there are more more in the pipeline!
So yes, we are walking at Fort Adams Park in Newport, RI on Sunday, September 22nd to honor those we have lost, those who are struggling, and all the amazing caregivers.
All Association programs (education, support groups, program and outreach, etc) are free and the Walk is the number one fundraiser to support these vital services. Please consider making a donation if you are able, to help advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association once again this year.
Thank you for helping us continue to fight against Alzheimer's disease and all other dementias. It is working!
All our love,
Nicki & Joe
