For as long as I can remember, my life has been intertwined with a deep and profound mission to be of service and to help others. That’s why I became a registered nurse. In more recent years, I believe I was called to become a Certified Dementia Practitioner®. My journey has been one of both personal heartache and professional dedication.
My journey began with a profound personal loss. I watched helplessly as dementia gradually took away my Dad’s ability to enjoy his senior years, leaving him, my Mom and our entire family in a state of constant heartache. The despair of seeing someone you love lose their memories, their personality, and their joy is something that no one should endure alone. It was this painful experience that fueled my passion to support others facing similar challenges.
I now dedicate my life to helping individuals who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or other dementias, as well as the many people whose lives are connected with theirs. From caregivers who sacrifice so much to provide comfort and care, to spouses who navigate the emotional and practical impacts of their loved one’s diagnosis, to children, families, and friends who experience the ripple effects of dementia, each person affected is part of a broader community of support and resilience.
Dementia is not just a diagnosis; it’s a journey that affects entire families and communities. Every day, I see the profound impact it has on spouses, who often become the primary caregivers, facing both emotional and physical challenges. I see children who struggle to understand and cope with their parent’s condition, and families who find their dynamics shifting as they rally around a loved one. Friends, neighbors, and colleagues also feel the strain, each person trying to offer support in their own way, often feeling helpless and overwhelmed.
In honor of this collective journey and the immense strength of everyone involved, I am participating in the Pittsburgh Alzheimer’s Walk on October 19, 2024. I invite you to join me in this important event, to walk in support of those who are living with dementia, and to stand beside the caregivers, families, and communities affected by this challenging disease.
Your participation and financial support are crucial. They not only raise awareness but also provide critical funding for research and support services. By walking together, we send a powerful message of hope and solidarity. We honor those who are living with Alzheimer’s, remember those we have lost, and show appreciation for the caregivers and loved ones who give so much.
Join us in this walk to make a difference. Whether you walk in memory of a loved one, in honor of someone currently battling dementia, or to support the entire community affected by this disease, your involvement is invaluable. Together, we can take steps towards a future where Alzheimer’s is no longer a burden, but a memory of the past.
With hope and heartfelt gratitude,
Jennifer
