This is my Grammy Sheriff, she lost her battle with alzheimer's on 2/27/2012. My family and I watched this cruel disease take her from us twice. Once when she no longer knew who we were and second when her body went. The Forget Me Not Flames starts every year on 2/27 in her honor.
My Grammy Ritter was spared. I thought the cruelest April Fool's Day prank was that we lost her that day. As I reflect on what Alzheimer’s has taken from me and my family, I realize that it came 4/4 when we received confirmation that she had early stages. What sticks with me was her saying "i may not be in the best of health, but at least I have my memories". God spared her and took her home before Alzheimer’s took those from her.
It looks like Alzheimer's could be striking my family for the third time as we received news that an MRI shows signs of early stages of dementia for my mom. More than ever I have to do everything I can to help find a cure for this disease!
Alzheimer’s isn’t stopping and neither are we. By participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, I’m raising awareness and funds to advance the fight against this disease — funds that allow the Alzheimer’s Association to provide 24/7 care and support while accelerating critical research.
Families facing Alzheimer’s and all other dementia need us — and with your help, we can be there for them. Please make a donation or register as a participant and start your own fundraising efforts. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s disease.
