I am walking in memory of My Mom. My Mom lost her battle with Alzheimer's last year. She was only 76 years old. She had been sick for over 10 years and in memory care for over 5 years. She didn't know who I was for the last 3-4 years and she didn't know my name for 4-5 years.
Here is one of my favorite memories of My Mom while she was sick, but before she was in memory care:
Dad was overwhelmed, as can be expected, so I would try to help by taking Mom shopping and to dinner one night a week. This one Wednesday evening I was driving Mom home after dinner and she said to me, "What is your Mom's name?" I said, "Well you are my Mom, so my Mom's name is Bernadette." (My Dad's name is Don.). She responded, "You are!!!" With so much excitement and joy! "Don is going to be SO excited to hear that!" :)
My Mom was a wonderful, warm, loving, happy and positive person. I miss her every day!
Currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's and that number is expected to grow to as many as 14 million by 2050. Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of this disease.
Together, we can end Alzheimer's disease. Please make a donation to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.
Thank you for joining the fight against Alzheimer's!
