Alzheimer's is a disease that hits close to home for many of us, myself included. My grandmother battled severe dementia in the last few years of her life, and it profoundly impacted our family.
Imagine a life without short-term memory. For my grandmother, each day was a new struggle to piece together the fragments of her reality. Visiting her became a bittersweet routine of reintroductions and reminders, knowing that if she couldn't recall it, it didn't exist in her mind.
Her confusion about the passage of time was heartbreaking. She often believed we hadn't seen each other in ages, even if we had just parted ways the day before. And the realization that her mother was no longer alive was a fresh wound each time it surfaced.
Alzheimer's doesn't just steal memories; it robs individuals of their autonomy and changes the dynamics of family relationships. Loved ones become caregivers, navigating the challenges of providing daily assistance while mourning the loss of the person they once knew.
We all wish for our loved ones to enjoy their golden years in peace and contentment. Unfortunately, Alzheimer's can shatter those dreams, leaving behind a trail of heartache and uncertainty.
My grandmother passed away in February 2022, but her memory lives on in our hearts. While we miss her dearly, we take comfort in knowing that her mind and heart are finally at peace.
By participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer's, we're honoring her memory and joining the fight against this devastating disease. Together, we can make a difference and support research and programs aimed at finding a cure and providing care for those affected by Alzheimer's.
