Dear families and friends of Alzheimer's,
It's August and we ae heading to another Alzheimer's walk coming on September 16th. Wanted to share my story again on why I have walked since 2015.
Early in 2015 my mother, Dorothy Vorpe was not herself. We her family had noticed she was forgetting things, repeating herself and struggling to do normal daily duties. We decided there was a need to have her evaluated by a physician so in March of that year she went through the testing, and it was confirmed for us that she had the start of dementia. She needed more supervision as she lived alone and so we hired a part time care giver to stay with her during the day. I continued to check on her several times during the day and administered her medications. As she declined, we saw a need for her to have full time care. As a family we talked with her and shared our concerns with her. She recognized that things were changing and so she agreed to go with us to visit some care facilities in the area to see if that was what would meet her needs. Within a few months we had secured her a place at a well-recognized memory care unit, and she moved in to the facility to a beautiful unit with al her own furniture and personal items.
This was a very difficult decision to make for all of us including her, but she soon adapted and fit in to the routine of the care center. As this was very close proximity to our homes in Troy, we were able to visit very often as were many of her other family members and church friends. She lived under their care over 5 years with Alzheimer's/dementia. She lost her battle on September 1st, 2016.
Alzheimer's is a terrible disease that so far has no cure. We walk to help raise funds for research to help find this cure and the first survivor.
We also walk, because of the Alzheimer's organization and all those who support it every year, so we continue to do the same.
We encourage others who have experienced Alzheimer's in their families to do the same.
Thank you,
Jane Pence
