Welcome to my Walk page! The photo on the right is my late grandma, Cleo. Toward the end of her life, she started to exhibit strange behaviors that were completely out of the ordinary: hiding her possessions, paranoia about being in groups of people, "forgetting" to eat and how to cook, even giving rides to strangers. As most of you reading this may know, these are telltale dementia symptoms--but her situation turned out to be a bit more complex. After a hospitalization and a battery of tests, it was discovered that Cleo was suffering from a brain tumor, which was causing her dementia. The surgery would have been extensive, and after tallying up the pros and cons, the decision was made to forgo the procedure. My mom was grandma's primary caregiver until she moved into assisted living, and even then, the community was intentionally just steps away from mom's house, so she was able to visit grandma daily.
On October 1, I walk for Cleo and the millions of others who struggle with dementia, as well as their families, who often themselves carry great burdens. Working in senior living, I also walk for the numerous residents I have had over the years who have battled, and died from, this devastating condition.
If you have been similarly touched, or are alarmed about the growing number of people developing dementia and Alzheimer's, please consider supporting my Walk with a donation.
May we live to see the first survivor.
