This is my fourth 'Walk to End Alzheimer's' event, and this is my fourth time updating this page. The years pass on, but the story doesn't change. My Mom has moderate stage Alzheimer's, and there is no cure.
When I updated this page last year, I talked about how Mom would still ask me about my husband, other family members and work. Those days are gone. Luckily, she still remembers me and Jon, but we don't get to carry on conversations anymore. Someone used the term "word salad" to me recently, and I guess that's a perfect description for how our visits go. Mom is still verbal, but the words she says don't go together anymore. Some days she's happy and content, and other days she agitated and angry. I just want to make it better, but I can't. And it sucks!
I miss my Mom. We used to shop and travel. I would talk to her on the phone multiple times a week. When I was happy or sad, I would talk to her. When I needed to know how to make a dish, I would call her. Now that we have moved into our new house, she would have been the first person to come help us decorate. Those days are gone, and it makes me so sad.
No one should have to endure Alzheimer's. It takes a person's dignity and independence, and it robs a person of being able to enjoy the later years of their life.
I believe that there is a cure for Alzheimer's. I believe that it's just a matter of time, the right researcher and the dollars to do the research. So, I'm asking for your support. Whether it's $1 or $1,000, your donation allows organizations like the Alzheimer's Association to provide research funding. They also provide critical education and support to those people living with Alzheimer's and those who care for them.
I pray that I get to see the first survivor of Alzheimer's in my lifetime. Please join me in the fight!
