Around the time of the pandemic's start in 2020, I noticed my mother seemed to be forgetting recent conversations more often than usual. We made a neurological appointment, and after some tests and MRIs, it was determined that she was beginning to show symptoms of dementia. She was 71 years old at the time.
Here we are, more than four years later, and her slow and steady decline has been very difficult for everyone involved. I have been her primary caregiver since this started, from managing her finances, all of her medical needs, and as of last year, her transportation. (We finally convinced her to stop driving in October, and she took that very hard.)
I first signed the family up to walk in the 2022 Alzheimer's walk as a way to give mom a nice outing with her kids, and to show her that she's not alone in her suffering. In 2023, I created a team for her, Jeanne's Weenies, and that ended up being a lot of fun, so I think we have an annual tradition on our hands!
Like so many other diseases, all forms of dementia are horrific, and so, so hard on both the people diagnosed, and those who love them. The Alzheimer's Association is such a valuable asset to people like me, who often feel so helpless, clueless and outright useless. Any time I can help raise money and awareness for this organization, you can bet I am going to.
Please consider donating, or joining the Weenies on this year's walk, in support of my mom, and everyone affected by dementia. Thank you!
