Alzheimer's isn't stopping and neither am I. I am walking in memory of my mom Juanita Graske, who passed away due to complications from Alzheimer’s.
The challenge of caring for an aging parent is complicated enough, but this disease is heartbreaking. My mom was physically sound, and was cognizant enough to understand she was forgetting things. She so badly wanted to remember things she wanted to share with us, that she would right it down on a post it note and put it on the kitchen wall. Soon the wall was covered.
She reached a point that she couldn’t remember why she wrote it or even that she did. It was hard to watch her struggle, but we were grateful for having insight into the things she felt were important. Even if she couldn’t remember, we could start a conversation with her knowing it was something she cared about.
As her Alzheimer’s progressed, it felt like you lost her over and over again.
Our last Christmas with her, we were amazed at how much she remembered and that she recognized everyone. We lost her for a final time a few weeks later.
I am walking to find a cure so other son’s don’t have to lose their Mom like this.
Thank you!
