I am walking in honor of my mother, Mary (Heron) and to help reclaim the future for the millions affected by Dementia/Alzheimer's. Although it seems like yesterday, we lost Mom in October of 2013 to this horrible disease. To her family and all who knew her, she was an amazing spunky lady with a huge heart always willing to help anyone who need it.
My mother was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia (Alzheimer's type) in 2005. In 2013, after eight years of living with this disease, my Mom was unable to continue to live at home. After moving her to a nursing home, she declined very rapidly. We watched her go from the Matriarch and head caregiver of our family, to a quiet, withdrawn lady. With every day we watched her slipped more and more away from us. Within six months, dementia took her from us. We are a small, close family so we did not let a day go by that someone wasn't with her. We cannot stand by and watch what happened to us and to her, happen to other families!
I know that my mom is an angel is looking down on us and making sure we are all safe and happy. I feel her with me every day, guiding me as she always did. I miss being able to talk, laugh and even cry with her. She was an amazing lady and a true blessing to me and our family. She will never be forgotten!
I am hoping that my commitment will bring the awareness we need to finding a cure for this devastating disease and make available the support those dealing with Dementia/Alzheimer's need every day. Please join me in helping make a difference!
