As many of you know, I’ve been dedicated to advancing the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association since I began as a volunteer with the Western New York Chapter in 2014. On Saturday, September 24th, I will lace up my sneakers, throw on my t-shirt and arrive at the Outer Harbor bright and early to help set up for my 9th Buffalo Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
Every single walk season holds a special place in my heart – but this year, it is more personal to me than it has ever been. My grandfather, Manuel Rodrigues Corregedor, passed away last month from complications due to COVID-19. During the last year of his life, he developed dementia. There were times I would visit with him and he would look at me, unsure of who I was, and ask, “What’s your name again, sweetie?” Even though he couldn’t quite place me, I could tell that he knew that he loved me. And I could tell that he knew that I loved him.
My grandpa was a remarkable man who lived a life worth telling about. The memories that he created, the stories that he shared, and the pieces of the beautiful life that he lived are now left with my family and me (what a precious gift). This year, I walk in honor of his memory. And I will continue to walk, every year, until a world without Alzheimer’s and other dementia is realized.
If you would like to walk with me this year, please join my team! If you are able to support my efforts by making a donation, I’d greatly appreciate it.
