Wow! This is my 7th year as Team Captain for Memaw's Marchers in The Walk To End Alzheimers on October 21st. I'm walking for my Mom, Fran Morey of Caledonia, New York, who I love very much. Mom is now going into her 8th year as a resident on the memory impaired floor of the Episcopal Church Home in Rochester. It's hard to believe how much Alzheimer's destroys people. Mom was once a vibrant and smart woman, always on the move. She is now total care, in a wheelchair, barely speaking. Our family has witnessed Alzheimer's impact as we've watched Mom deteriorate year after year, moment by moment. Many people ask why I still visit her when she can't say my name anymore. I tell them she's still my Mom, a different Mom, but she's the Mom who raised and loved us. She would be there at my side if it was me. She'll surprise me when she occasionally says a word or two, communicates with her eyes, and smiles and laughs at something I say. When I have to leave after visiting her, I feel good that a part of Mom is buried deep down inside of her .Mom has been on hospice for two years and there is no magic medicine that could ever cure her. She's had a full life, loved and raised 3 children, loved her grandchildren, enjoyed family gatherings, taught reading in the Caledonia School system, loved the outdoors, hiking, walking around Caledonia for 2 miles every day, loved her flowers, unique excursions, and so much more, but she didn't deserve Alzheimer's.The cure for Alzheimer's will not help her, but there are advances on the horizon through extensive research, I am walking and fundraising for MOM and for THE CURE.. Please donate or register to walk with me on October 21st. My team is Memaw's Marchers. My adult kids called Mom Memaw from the time they were little.
