himself as having a "mind like a steel trap" .... until he didn't.
Alzheimer's slowly took away his memory, his humor, his voice and his mobility. The changes were gradual but painful for me and my family and the disease altered his personality and took away the man who cared for his family above all.
We were lucky. My mother was a former nurse and we had the means to have around the clock care for my father when he needed and constant companionship/stimulation to keep him engaged. There are countless others who struggle with the care of those afflicted and they need our support and assistance.
His final days were in January 2018 and passed away at home after hearing my sister replay her speech for her judicial investiture the day before.
I am walking in my father's memory as a victim of the disease. I am also walking to honor my mother as she was his primary caregiver and doing yeoman's work in her mid-70s caring for him. Her boundless love and care for my father likely led to her own physical demise as she passed away a year and a half after my Dad with no prior health issues. But perhaps they couldn't bare to be apart any longer after 54 years together.
Please support as I walk that others get the support they need to combat this disease and researchers can take further steps to eradicate it.
Thank you for any contributions you can make.
