Alzheimer’s isn’t stopping and neither am I. By participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, I’m raising awareness and funds to advance the fight against this disease — funds that allow the Alzheimer’s Association to provide 24/7 care and support while accelerating critical research.
My father has been battling this disease for several years. I cared for him as long as I could in my home. Things got really hard and I had to move him into a memory care facility. I was heartbroken I could not support his needs. Recently he was moved into a skilled nursing facility because professional assisted living was not even enough. He is not the man he used to be. It’s like he’s imprisoned in a body he can’t recognize. My dad will die there. I know that and have to accept it somehow. The pain this causes me is undescribable and the reason I joined the board of the CNY Alzheimers Association. I will not stop fighting for my dad and for the other caregivers out there that have experienced the shame and isolation I have felt. My story is told to bring people together: to understand you are not as alone as you feel caring for someone with this disease, and together we can and we will beat this monster.
Families facing Alzheimer’s and all other dementia need us — and with your help, we can be there for them. Please make a donation or register as a participant and start your own fundraising efforts. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s disease.
Thank you for your support!
