In August of 2014, one of my favorite people lost their battle with Alzheimer's disease. Joyce took me into her life as an honorary granddaughter, welcoming me into her family and home. She supported my dreams without question and never let me doubt myself. She always made sure to keep dill pickles and American cheese in the fridge for me, and just sat back and laughed while my best friend and I would do 80's workout videos in her living room. Her favorite curse word was "phooey dust," I never knew her without a cat by her side or on her lap, and she never passed up the chance to go to a buffet. I drank lunchtime tea with her every day and, without even realizing it, became best friends with one of the strongest people I have ever known.
Watching Joyce's struggle with Alzheimer's was heart breaking and if it weren't for the resources available for people living with dementia and caregivers alike, our entire family would have been lost.
Currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's and that number is expected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050. Together, we can end Alzheimer's disease.
