Why we walk...
We walk to support all those who are affected by this terrible disease, especially those we have come to know and love. In this line of business we serve a lot of elderly clients who are most susceptible to this disease, most of whom don't realize it until it is too late to do anything about it. Case in point, we recently had a very dear friend find out too late that he had Alzheimer's but felt he was in the very early stages and it would not be an issue. I asked him to join us in our walk that year and he and I led the walk, he carried his blue flower with pride.
Within 6 months of that walk he was having issues remembering the date and had to write himself notes to remember the simplest things or he would forget completely. Within a year his condition deteriorated so much that he could no longer carry on a conversation. His final Diagnosis was Vascular Dementia and he was having mini strokes which deposited plaque unto his memory cells and blood vessels in the brain which reduces the oxygen to the brain. He developed Sundowners syndrome and lost the ability to know who his closest family members were. Sadly he passed away 18 months of his diagnosis. His family said they suspected there was a problem at least 2 years earlier then his initial diagnosis and had spoken to primary care doctors but was assured it was old age. Their advise now is to be more persistent with doctors as it may have prolonged his life had they found out sooner.
We walk for all those who have gone through similar stories and hope that one day there will be a cure for this terrible disease that affects so many lives.
