My maternal grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimers/Dementia back in 2019/2020. She has been a major part of my life since she has always lived within walking distance of my house. She does the best she can to remember all of us, my mom, my two brothers, my father and me, but at times, it is hard for her. She is on what I call a five minute memory cycle, meaning that she can only remember the last five minutes. She has to constantly ask me how old I am, how school is going, or when I'll finish school. I finished my MA program in May '23, she doesn't remember.
My mom is constantly at my grandmother's house and when she's not, she's on the phone with her. Sometimes getting more than 15 phone calls from her in a day. When my mother is at her mom's house, she helps with paying bills, keeping her company or taking her to doctor's appointments. None of which my grandmother really ever remembers. There have been times when my mother has called her to tell her some news and then later that same day, my grandmother calls to tell my mom the news not remembering where she got the information from.
My grandmother, Nana we call her, was a school nurse for 40 years, taking care of Newark's children. She is still a caring and kind woman as she still tries to take care of her own children, grand children and great-grandchild. She does the best she can to take care of us when she can, even going out of her way to donate her time to us. I am grateful to her for that and I know my parents are too.
