Mom has been gone 9 years now. She left us on April 14, 2015. We miss her everyday. She would be so proud of her kids, her 23 grandchildren and especially her 36 great-grandchildren.
LOVE REMEMBERS is my battle cry in the fight against Alzheimer's Disease. Our loved ones may not always remember where they are, what day it is, or even who their loved ones are but as caretakers, we remember the love they have shown us throughout our lives. My mom's last words spoken shortly before her last breath were, "I love you girls". She remembered all 8 of her daughters at that moment as we held her hand!
Mom was officially diagnosed in 2006 although we saw signs of her dementia as early as 2003. She was moved to a care facility in 2010 and that is when I began to get involved with the Walk to End Alzheimer's. We will continue to help in the fight against Alzheimer's.
I have many friends and acquaintances who are now facing the disease or caring for someone with dementia. It hurts more than you can imagine until you face the challenge yourself. It is not an easy battle but education helps.
Everyone with a brain has a risk of developing Alzheimer's.
The Alzheimer's Association offers a 24 hour hotline 7 days a week. That number is 800-272-3900. This is available in 200 different languages.
Risks that may lead to you or your loved ones developing Alzheimer's or dementia include age, genetics, race, your environment and lifestyle, heart health, physical activity, diet, sleep social and cognitive engagement, education and/or traumatic brain injury!
