My Grandmother and I try to do this walk every year in honor of her dad/my great grandfather, Archie Renzelman who passed away August 21, 2011. He developed Alzheimer's late in his life while still married to his wife Ramona, whilst living in Colorado. It was discovered when someone had seen him walking around town looking dazed and confused. He was eventually moved to a home and he went downhill pretty fast despite being in good physical condition. He recognized his wife for a long time (they had been married for 60+ years if I remember correctly) and always smiled when the rest of the family visited. He couldn't tell us who we were but he knew we were family by the way he smiled. I used to visit almost every summer vacation and spent a couple of weeks with my Great Grandma and Great Papa. Great Papa and I would spend a considerable amount of time together eating Sherbet, doing word search puzzles, and going across the alley to the skating rink and kicking a red rubber M&M ball around. I always had fun out there and never regretting visiting. I miss making those enjoyable memories with him, with both of them.
So I am asking for some donations to help in the research to help those with Alzheimer's, research is a lot of trial and error. None of which can be done without our help. I used to think donating to some places was just a waste of money, especially when they had been asking for donations for so long. But science is complicated... I can't do it! I don't know anyone with that kind of knowledge. So I ended up realizing things take time and you have to make some mistakes to find the solutions.
Alzheimer’s isn’t stopping and neither are we. By participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, I’m raising funds and awareness to advance the fight against this disease — funds that allow the Alzheimer’s Association to provide 24/7 care and support while accelerating critical research.
Families facing Alzheimer’s and all other dementia need us now more than ever — and with your help, we can be there for them. Please make a donation or register as a participant and start your own fundraising. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s disease.
Thank you!
