Imagine having to hunt your elderly relatives through the states of North Carolina and Virginia. That was the situation we found ourselves in following our daughter's wedding. Dad had been a long distance truck driver and Mom had driven with him many times. To say they were experienced travelers is a huge understatement, but this time, they were lost. Several times during that eventful day, we got a phone call stating that they did not know where they were. We would get directions to find them from someone at a gas station or convenience store only to arrive and find that they had left thinking that they knew where they were going this time. Finally, they somehow made a circle and arrived back at one of the stops they had already been to. A fast-thinking good Samaritan convinced them to come inside the store and wait for us to get there. We had been searching for hours! When we found them, they had driven over 100 miles in the wrong direction. That's when we realized that something was terribly wrong. We knew that they had been forgetful, but we did not realize the seriousness of the situation until that weekend. Fast forward a few years and we realized that before every family function, Mom was telling Dad who we all were, and how to recognize us. I will never forget the heartbreak on my husband's face the first time that his father did not know who he was. We then had to relive that same heartbreak when his mother did not know him and wanted him to leave. Alzheimer's is a brutal disease that steals your loved ones and causes untold heartbreak to families. Anything that you can donate to help eradicate this scourge is greatly appreciated.
