Alzheimer's and other dementias wreak havoc on families and cause a significant drain on society. Please consider joining me and the Alzheimer's Association in the battle against these ravaging diseases.
I am a retired physician. Very early in my career, it was my privilege to help with a study that investigated the use of PET scanning in the evaluation of Alzheimer’s disease. The volunteer participants in the study were required to repeatedly wear a cumbersome helmet-like device and remain very still for prolonged periods in an early generation PET scanner. These folks, who were afflicted with dementia, had nothing personally to gain from participating, yet they gladly did what they could because of their hope that future patients would benefit.
Over the years since then, PET scanning has evolved to become an effective diagnostic tool and I have learned more about the devastation of dementing illnesses as they have struck family members, friends, and mentors as well as patients.
Memories of the selflessness and quiet dignity of those brave souls from that early PET study have stayed with me and now inspire me to do what I can in the fight against dementing diseases. I hope you will join me by making a donation or registering as a participant and starting your own fundraising efforts. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Thank you for your support!
