My Grandpa, the Rev. Jim "Buck" Shemwell, passed in 2016 after a battle with a form of dementia, most likely Alzheimer's. He never got to see me graduate law school. I got to hold his hand one last time, and it broke my heart. I wanted to find a way to make sure no one else suffered from this disease.
Unfortunately, our collective struggle with Alzheimer's and Dementia did not stop with my family. But, we at the Alzheimer's Association are not stopping either. By participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, I’m raising funds and awareness to advance the fight against this disease — funds that allow the Alzheimer’s Association to provide 24/7 care and support while accelerating critical research.
Specifically, I walk because I wish that my family and I would have known about the 24/7 help-line and resources that could have been available to us, that would have made our journey and my grandpa's journey with dementia far easier. Each donation helps keep this help-line going, giving families a lifeline in the fight against these diseases.
Families facing Alzheimer's and other dementias need us more now than ever before - we are taking our first steps into an era of TREATMENT! We must keep pushing. With your help, the association can be there for families, can continue to help with research, and help us all imagine a world without Alzheimer's and dementia.
Please make a donation or register and walk with us! Together we can #ENDALZ.
