I grew up with an outstanding family including amazing grandparents. My Grandpa Swede (Albert Erickson) was always the center of attention with his witty sense of humor, love for the outdoors, captivating story telling and overall sense of adventure and love of his family.
When we discovered grandpa had the early stages of Alzheimer's it was heart breaking to all of us. Slowly we watched the characteristics that made him larger than life, fade away. We had so many questions that went unanswered, so few sources of education at that time, and a complete uncertainty of how to proceed with his care. Family members, my cousin specifically, really stepped up in the hardest moments and cared for grandpa in a way that he was very responsive to.
The day before my parents and myself were to move closer to him, he passed away. We are still saddened by the fact that we were not able to say goodbye or be with him in those last few days.
I walk to honor my grandfather in hopes that no other families will have to experience the hardships of losing a loved one in such a confusing and hurtful way. I hope to inspire others to raise awareness, promote education and strive for a cure for Alzheimer's.
