In early 2020, right after the start of the global pandemic, my mom Birdie Mae was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. She had shown signs of short-term memory loss, but shortly after this picture was taken, she started to need more and more assistance.
Our family had to make that very hard choice to move her to a more supportive environment and get some help with those daily needs. As the pandemic grew longer and the facility had to limit access and programs, the confusion and agitation with being alone away from her home and daily contact with family seemed to accelerate the course of the disease (or at least the outward manifestation). In the end, Birdie was able to cross the finish line with the help of Hospice in her apartment with no need to move her again. This was a blessing.
I am asking for your support so we can find a way to help individuals with dementia and give them and their loved ones a more graceful and dignified journey.
Alzheimer’s isn’t stopping and neither are we. By participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, I’m raising awareness and funds to advance the fight against this disease — funds that allow the Alzheimer’s Association to provide 24/7 care and support while accelerating critical research.
Families facing Alzheimer’s and all other dementia need us — and with your help, we can be there for them. Please make a donation or register as a participant and start your own fundraising efforts. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s disease.
Thank you for your support!
