I first heard the words "Alzheimer's disease" around 1984 when my mother was diagnosed. Back then, it was not a common diagnosis. Diagnostic criteria had just been established and many health providers still thought it was all part of normal aging. There were no medications and little recognition of the toll caregiving would take on my father.
Things have improved since then. Alzheimer's and related dementia are now recognized as disease processes, medications to help with symptoms are available, and caregivers are beginning to get the support and recognition they need and deserve.
But, there is still a lot to do! We need ways to prevent dementia. We need medications to slow the disease's progression. We need to provide better support and resources for caregivers. We need a cure.
My mother was the first, but sadly not the last. Please join me in the fight to End Alzheimer's!
