I'll never forget the impact it had on my family. I witnessed firsthand the heartbreaking aftermath of his shrinking brain, like the time he drove his car through a grocery store, all because he wanted to pull it closer for grandma. His driving privileges and keys had been revoked well over 1 year Before! It turned out he had a valet key in his wallet from over 20 years ago when he bought the car brand new. As the news unfolded that night on our local channel, we had all gathered as a family to discuss. I sat in disbelief as I watched my grandfather speak up about the news report saying “It was a bad accident! I saw it! I was there!”! Yet he had no idea that he was the person that had caused it! I knew right then this disease was one of the most mis-understood, understated, horrific diseases that truly had no answers, no reasoning, and most importantly, No Cure! Years later, after losing both grandparents to this disease, my uncle Norm was diagnosed with a specific form of it and has since passed as well.In the later part of my own father’s illness, he was also diagnosed with Dementia. He has since passed. A few years ago another of my moms siblings was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and just this year has had to be placed in care as her 90 yr old husband could no longer take care of her at home. My eldest brother had been showing signs for the past 5-7 years as well. We all knew things were changing quickly for him. He passed away this past October, for his body gave out before the rest of his brain did. We are grateful he and the others that have passed are no longer plagued by this relentless disease! I fear this inevitably is coming for me and more of my family members and friends! I have sworn my body and mind to be donated for science in hopes of advancement in research, medicines, treatments and ultimately a cure! Now I work with the Alzheimer’s Association whenever possible to help raise awareness, to help advocate for those voiceless and also to raise funds for research and to hopefully create a CURE one day! These are some of the reasons I WALK!
