Eileen attended Rosemont College on a full scholarship, graduating in 1948 with a B.A. in Chemistry with honors. She ranked 10th in her graduating class. She worked briefly after graduation as an editor for the American Chemical Society’s Scientific Magazine in Washington D.C.
During her career, she was also a science and religion teacher at St. Mark’s Catholic School in Catonsville, MD and St. Louis Catholic School in Clarksville, MD.
Eileen was married to John Hoffen. John passed in 2001. Eileen is survived by their six children, John Hoffen Jr. (Sherry), Eileen Pierce (Paul), Hugh Hoffen (Darlene), Denise Shifflett (Rick), Paul Hoffen (Debra) and Joan DeWitt (Monte), 15 grandchildren (Lauren, Shane, Eileen Marie, Jennifer, Rachel, Veronica, Paige, Caitlin, Gabrielle, Sophia, Emily, Maria, John, Joseph and Katie), and 9 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Frank Gillespie, a resident of Maris Grove Retirement Community, Pennsylvania and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral mass will be held Thursday, February 8th at 11:30 a.m. at Our Lady of The Angels on the Charlestown Retirement Community campus located at 711 Maiden Choice Lane in Catonsville, MD 21228. There will be a visitation session prior to the funeral from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Please consider donating to the Alzheimer's Association in honor of Eileen and her time spent as a Caregiver to her late husband, John (Jack) Hoffen. Eileen has requested that donations be directed to the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Howard County, run by her Granddaughter, Gabrielle Shifflett.
