My in-laws welcomed me into their family as if they had raised me themselves. Visiting their house felt like going home and I knew I was part of the family. We had so many great memories together and it was a shame to see Mama start to lose those memories.
Ultimately the progression of the disease took her life. Seeing the loss she suffered and the effect of her loss on the rest of our family, I want to do what I can to help keep others from experiencing the devastating effects of this disease.
My father-in-law Glenn passed away earlier this year. He was such a loving caregiver and it was inspiring to see the dedication he had for his wife, Cora.
This year I am walking in honor of Papa. He was a role model for being a good husband. Even before Mama started showing signs of dementia, he had talked about how he thought it would be nice if after they had both been cremated, we could take their ashes to his old family property where two creeks ran together and pour his ashes in one creek and Cora's in the other so that they would mingle together where the creeks joined. We told him we thought it was a beautiful idea and promised that we would make it happen.
When Mama died, he had me divide up the ashes so a portion could be buried at the cemetery, so he could have a portion to keep, and so we would have a portion to keep for the creek. After he died, we took their ashes to the creeks and fulfilled our promise and completed his last romantic gesture to his wife and love of his life.
Please help me honor his memory this year and help support all the people who have been or will be affected by Alzheimer's!
