I walk for my Great-Grandfather, Charles W.M. Nelson
Charles W. M. Nelson 1927 - June 23, 2013
Although he was born in Philadelphia, PA on November 25, 1927, his travels started early on moving to Galveston, TX, and studying at University of Texas. Charles' dry sense of humor and powerful voice even served him well as a radio announcer on KGBC/KOLE in Texas for two years before he joined the U.S. Air Force. He served as an academic and tactical instructor at various bases throughout the country before going to Japan where he was in charge of command testing and training for the Fifth Air Force throughout Japan and Korea. He retired from the service with the rank of Master Sergeant after serving his country for 20 years and was awarded the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal and Commendation Medal with multiple devices.
A second career as Training Director at Providence Hospital, Holyoke, MA kept him busy for another 20 years before again retiring. Charles served as the Western Mass Golden Gloves Boxing Commissioner for many years and was awarded the Jim Candy Memorial Award for his service.
He was an avid lifelong fisherman, having the opportunity to fish in many local spots as well as pursuing deep-sea fishing adventures in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

Alzheimer’s isn’t stopping and neither are we. By participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, I’m raising awareness and funds to advance the fight against this disease — funds that allow the Alzheimer’s Association to provide 24/7 care and support while accelerating critical research.
Families facing Alzheimer’s and all other dementia need us — and with your help, we can be there for them. Please make a donation or register as a participant and start your own fundraising efforts. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s disease.
Thank you for your support!
