This year our family is participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Portsmouth on October 6.
For those who don’t know, my wife Michelle was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2020. After numerous tests throughout the latter part of 2019, our first pandemic-forced telehealth visit was a confirmation of her diagnosis. Since then we have adopted the "adjust and adapt" motto to cope with our ever-changing situation. At the beginning of 2024 Michelle entered in-home hospice as the disease continues to take its toll.
Alzheimer’s is devastating. There is no cure. Current medical treatments focus on sustaining existing memory but with only limited (and short-term) success. It slowly, but surely, takes away your memories, your hobbies, your interests, your independence, your ability to communicate. Your world shrinks as social situations create confusion and your ability to recognize family and friends becomes more unreliable. By participating in this year’s walk, we are hoping to contribute, in some small way, to the advancement of research that will ultimately lead to the end of this disease.
We would love to have you on our team. Even if you can’t join us for the walk in person, consider joining the team and walking at a location convenient to you. If you can, please consider a donation.
Thank you for your support and consideration.
