Alzheimer's isn't stopping and neither are we. By participating in the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's, I'm raising awareness and funds to advance the fight against this disease - funds that allow the Alzheimer's Association to provide 24/7 care and support while accelerating critical research.
I have two main reasons for walking and those reasons are my grandmother (Joyce Giles) and my sweet memory care residents at The Blake.
I remember when my grandmother started showing signs of dementia and Alzheimer's. My only reference at that time was episodes of Grey's Anatomy. It started slow...like forgetting something she had just done or something she had just asked me. I lived with my grandmother during her journey before she moved into a memory care community. One of the times of forgetfulness that sticks out to me is when she came to my room at 3am, thinking it was 3pm, and asking if I was ready to go to the store and get stuff to make Sunday dinner...it was a Tuesday. The hardest part was seeing the talented, brilliant, smart meemaw I always knew slowly whither away...seeing her forget how to do her favorite things...when she couldn't remember my name or who I even was. I never got to say goodbye to the person she was. I walk to keep her memory alive and to hopefully one day find a cure.
