As a geriatric social worker dedicated to supporting patients and their caregivers, I see firsthand the devastating impact dementia has on individuals and families every day. This cause is deeply personal to me, as I have lost beloved family members to dementia and witnessed the profound challenges it brings to those left behind.
My journey with dementia is not just professional—it's deeply personal. My adopted Grandpa Ted was a man who was the epitome of hard work and kindness. He was taken from us by this relentless disease. He was the kind of man who could do anything—whether it was fixing a broken fence, offering a helping hand to a neighbor, or making us all laugh with his wonderful stories. His generosity knew no bounds, and he was a bright spirit.
Watching dementia slowly take away his abilities and memories was one of the hardest experiences of my life. This personal experience and others fuels my passion for my work and my drive to make a difference. Every day, I work with patients who remind me of my Grandpa Ted and with caregivers who, navigate the difficult journey of watching their loved ones age. Caregivers are often the unsung heroes, providing unwavering support while facing physical, emotional, and financial strain. Enhancing caregiver resources is essential to ensure that they have the tools, knowledge, and respite they need to care for their loved ones and themselves.
My role involves providing emotional support, coordinating care, and connecting families with vital resources. I advocate for better care practices and strive to make the healthcare system more compassionate and effective for those battling dementia and other age related diseases. I see their struggles, their moments of despair, and their small victories. I see the need for more resources, more support, and most importantly, a cure. Recently, my uncle was also diagnosed with dementia, bringing this disease even closer to home. His diagnosis is a stark reminder that Alzheimer's and related dementias continue to affect our loved ones, regardless of their age or background.
That's why I am raising funds for the Alzheimer's Association, an organization at the forefront of research, advocacy, and support for those affected by this relentless disease. The Alzheimer's Association is not just a charity; it's a lifeline for countless families. They fund critical research, provide vital support services, and advocate for better care and policies.
But they can't do it alone. They need our help. Every dollar donated brings us closer to breakthroughs in treatment, support for families, and ultimately, a cure. Your contribution, no matter the size, will make a significant difference. It will fund research that could one day stop Dementia in its tracks. It will provide care and support for families grappling with the daily realities of the disease. It will give hope to millions of people around the world.
Please join me in this fight. Together, we can bring hope to millions of families and move one step closer to a world without Dementia. Let's honor the memories of those we've lost and fight for a future where no one has to experience the heartbreak of Dementia.
As it says in Isaiah 41:10, "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Let us take strength from these words and come together to fight this disease.
Thank you and God Bless.
