He was diagnosed in 2013. The first couple of years, he was the same person to us. You didn't really notice the difference. But as time went on, the affects of Alzheimer's started to become clear. We knew it was only a matter of time until he would need professional care. Then one night, We got a phone call that We hoped We never got. Our Grandfather had wondered out of his house about 2 in the morning. By the time we found him, it was several hours later. He was cold, confused and tired. It was like someone flipped a switch and from that day on, We knew my time with him would be limited. He was able to get into the VA home where we could get the care he needed. We had good visits where he seemed like nothing was wrong and there were so hard ones. A week before he passed away, we were in and out of the nursing home. It was a crazy, emotional week. When we got the phone call from our Father that we needed to get the to nursing home, we rushed there to find my family gathered around the bed. He had been sleeping for the last 2 to 3 days, not able to eat or drink, so hospice made him as comfortable as they could. We sat there as a family laughing, crying and telling stories. Just before midnight on September 8th, 2018 he would take his last breath. We felt numb and broken, But refused to give up on the fight to end Alzheimer's!
