This year marks 16 years since we lost my adored father, Bernie Davis. My dad was a funny and affectionate man until he was cruelly ravaged by Alzheimer’s disease. Day by day, he slowly lost the ability to talk, walk and eat, soon becoming a shell of his former self. In 2020, we lost my much-loved mother, Phyllis Davis. My mom was a courageous fighter having battled and defeated breast cancer twice. Unfortunately, advanced dementia and Covid 19 were a struggle she could not overcome. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia in older adults. While there is still no cure, new medications have finally emerged to treat the progression of this disease. Experts continue to better understand how Alzheimer's changes the brain and this has led to more potential treatments that may affect the disease progress. My family and friends have been walking as team "Bernie's Buddies" since 2009 and in 2024, we hope to once again honor my parents’ memory by walking as a team on Sunday 9/8/2024. All funds raised through Walk to End Alzheimer's furthers the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association. We are closer than ever to stopping Alzheimer's disease and I am hopeful that one day we will live in a world free of Alzheimer’s and all other dementia.
