I don't recall when Grandma was diagnosed with dementia but I do recall we were all in denial for many years. She hid it very well and we wanted to believe she was ok. We started walking for Alzheimer’s in 2018. This was the year we realized we needed help. We needed 24 hour care from family, caregivers, friends, and anyone that could offer support. I remember it like it was yesterday because that year I made my one year old daughter walk her first 5k for Alzheimer's. Afterwards we went to breakfast at grandma's house.
At the time, we did not know then the impact this disease would have on our family, friends, caregivers, and strangers alike. Grandma was our rock; the glue that held our family together. We watched helplessly as this disease tried to take every bit of her physical being prematurely. She fought it until her body could not fight any longer.
Now we fight this battle for her and millions of others affected by this disease. After a tough year without her, we are joining forces to raise awareness for those who might be affected by this horrid disease. Now in 2021, my daughter will walk her 2nd 5k but this time we can't go to grandma's for breakfast.
