I come from a blended Ohana. My step grandmother, Janet Vestman was diagnosed with Dementia a few years ago. Although she lives in Idaho near my mom, Becky and stepdad, Kurt, I've had the privilege of being in her presence a few times before and after her diagnosis. Although each time has been different, the joy of her personality has always been the same. She may not remember who I am, but her smile and warmth remains Janet. Her love of Frank Sinatra, dancing and reminiscing of her childhood creates an atmosphere like no other. It ignites my curiosity of who she was, who she is, and who she will become.
There's no denying the sadness and frustrations that come with this disease. Both my Mom and Kurt show up for Janet every day. They show up physically and mentally, even when she thinks her own son is her brother or someone she doesn't know at all. They shine a bright light through humor, home cooked meals, and patience.
My participation w/ a walk to End Alzheimer's is to do my part by showing up for Janet, my mom, Kurt, and the many other's facing life's adversities.
Families facing Alzheimer’s and all other dementia need us now more than ever — and with your help, we can be there for them. Please make a donation or join my team and walk with me on November 4th 2023. Let's show up together!Malama pono,
