"Nothing wrong" was my mom's standard response to our looks of concern and desire to help her. We knew something was wrong but for about a year, with her refusals of leaving her home and defiant no ways of seeing a doctor, we could only arrange to look in on her and make food deliveries to sustain her physical care.
Then she fell and fractured her hip. The first responders were not able to transport without her consent and it would take more than a day to coax her to be taken to the hospital and finally be examined by doctors. Her hip was successfully repaired and she was diagnosed with signs of dementia. The only medical treatment for her at the time was a prescription to hopefully slow its progression, but no cure.
For over 10 years, we did whatever we could to ease her fear of what was happening and see to her comfort and care. And she continued to say for as long as she could, "nothing wrong."
I walk this year in memory of my mom Helen (October 2021), her twin sister Jean (May 2011) and in honor of all who are affected by dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
Please help me to raise funds and awareness to advance the fight against this disease.
Thank you!
