My story of Alzheimer's began when my Nana began to show signs of dementia. It started small but got progressively worse. She experienced Alzheimer's with forgetting simple things like what she had for lunch; however, she could remember every last detail of the distant past. I once showed her a bunch of photos from the 40s, 50s and 60s and she could name every person and even stories about each person. They were like flashcards! After seeing my father (not her son) for the first time in 20 years, she recognized him immediately when he went on a visit with me to her facility. Thankfully, she never forgot who I was and some of her last words to me were "I love you."
For me, the most painful thing about Alzheimer's was not her suffering. Heck, she was a spitfire and a sweetheart until the end. The worst part was the heartbreak in helplessly watching her go through it. When my Papa died, she would constantly ask where he was and I, literally, had to tell her he had passed almost every day.
Families facing Alzheimer’s and all other dementia need us — and with your help, we can be there for them. Please make a donation or register as a participant and start your own fundraising efforts. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s disease.
