It is absolutely heartbreaking how this horrible disease robs people of their memories, causes changes in their thinking abilities, and sometimes even alters their personality/behavior. Truly gut-wrenching to see this disease play out.
I watched this happen with my maternal grandfather. He succumbed to Alzheimer's in 2012 after a long fight. It was especially hard on my mom, who helped my grandmother care for him. Fortunately, the disease didn't cause him to be aggressive like I've seen happen to others, but to watch him become a shell of the person he was was difficult for the family.
Now I'm watching dementia steal my Mamaw's memories and alter who she is (thankfully not in an aggressive way either). I've always been extremely close to my grandmother and it's been really hard to see how she replays some memories on repeat, especially the not-so-good ones, and repeats stories (not always accurately anymore) in a looping fashion.
By participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, I’m raising funds and awareness to advance the fight against this awful disease — funds that allow the Alzheimer’s Association to provide 24/7 care and support while accelerating critical research. Did you know the FDA recently approved a drug that may help those with early onset?
Please make a donation or register as a participant on my team (The Memory Joggers) and start your own fundraising. Please register...Even if you don't plan to walk. Registering helps the Alzheimer's Association show they have support for the cause when applying for grants. Together, we can #ENDALZ. We have to.
Thank you!
