Alzheimer’s isn’t stopping and neither are we. By participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, I’m raising awareness and funds to advance the fight against this disease — funds that allow the Alzheimer’s Association to provide 24/7 care and support while accelerating critical research. I am walking to honor my brother-in-law, Kelly Anderson. In 2020, he was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's at the age of 59. However, symptoms had appeared a few years earlier, we just did not recognize it at the time. Initially, his neurologist felt he had Adult Attention Deficit Disorder. But in 2020, his memory became worse. Over the years, Kelly had worked at several transportation companies, a major food production company, and at a school bus manufacturer. He had always been a diligent, attentive worker. So when he started having trouble at work, he and my sister sought answers. It took a trip to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL, where he underwent extensive testing, to finally confirm what my sister had suspected. He had to stop working and my sister retired from a life of teaching, two years after his diagnosis, to take care of him at home. They stay as active as possible, traveling and working with their church's Care Building ministry. Kelly no longer drives. However he still has a great sense of humor and a good outlook on life. They feel their faith in the Lord has helped calm their worst fears, and they feel blessed to spend as much time together as they can. It is a day-by-day journey. When asked about sharing his story, he wants people to know that this disease can strike those who are younger. It's not just for the elderly.
Families, like ours, facing Alzheimer’s and all other dementia need us — and with your help, we can be there for them. Please make a donation or register as a participant and start your own fundraising efforts. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s disease.
