I am walking in memory of my mom, Mary Ann Cooper Kirby, who was also known as Mack. We noticed she wasn't acting the same as she once did. Her bathing and eating habits changed and she wasn't paying her bills. We took her to a neurologist and she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in July 2020. She didn't engage in our conversations like she once did. She'd just sit and listen. Every now and again, we might get a smile out of her. She was slowly declining and it just broke my heart a little with each passing day. Unfortunately, she passed August 2021. Her last days were spent lying in a hospital bed at my brother's house. When Hospice told us she could go at any minute, we made it a point to stay with her and let her know we loved her. We were all able to say our goodbyes and at 3:00 in the morning on August 26th, she passed away.
Alzheimer’s isn’t stopping and neither are we. By participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, I’m raising funds and awareness to advance the fight against this disease — funds that allow the Alzheimer’s Association to provide 24/7 care and support while accelerating critical research.
Families facing Alzheimer’s and all other dementia need us now more than ever — and with your help, we can be there for them. Please make a donation or register as a participant and start your own fundraising. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s disease.
Thank you!
