I have been participating in the Alzheimer's memory walk since 2009. I would like to think my efforts are helping to make a difference. I lost my mother June 14, 2010, due Alzheimer's; and last year December 07, 2022, I lost my mother-in-law due to complications caused by dementia; therefore, I know first-hand how devastating this disease is and how it affects and impacts a family.
It's very heart wrenching watching a loved one lose their memory; trying to remember what they want to say, forgetting how to eat, and do simple tasks for themselves. But worst of all, at the end forgetting you are her daughter!!!
I was my mom's caregiver and saw first-hand how this disease ravaged her mind and consequently slowly lost her bodily functions. At the end, she lived in "her own little world". She reverted back to her childhood memories, mostly talked about her parents, her siblings, how she wanted to go outside to play with them and ride her horse.
It's up to all of us to advocate for those living with Alzheimer's not only for a cure, but for the best quality of life possible. Someone in your family, a friend, or even yourself might be afflicted with this disease, for that reason health and research is so vitally important now.
By participating in the 2024 Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's, I'm committed to raising awareness and funds for Alzheimer research, health, care and support to help reclaim the future for millions.
While we don't know what Walk day will look like just yet, I'm committed to making a difference in the fight to end Alzheimer's, and I hope you'll join me. I need your help and support to do my part. Please join my team or support my effort by making a donation, there is no minimum amount required, every little bit helps the Alzheimer's Association advance research into prevention, treatments and a cure for Alzheimer's.
Thank you for joining our movement! The end of Alzheimer's disease starts here.
