Dementia is destructive. There are plenty of facts and figures on the impacts of dementia that demonstrate the importance of putting an end to it, but what sticks in my mind is the individual, human impact.
- "Please understand, my dad was a pastor and everyone adored him; what you see now is the opposite of who he is."
- "I need to get to the train station. Why won't anyone take me there? Where's the way out of here? I have to get to the train now!"
- "He wanders, and I'm terrified he'll sneak out and I'll never see him again."
- "I never want to become like my mom and live long but with constant disorientation, agitation, and not knowing my family."
These sentiments people have shared with me jump to mind, but these thoughts only scratch the surface of deeper struggles experienced by those impacted by dementia.
I desperately want to live in a world with dementia survivors. Through supporting the Alzheimer's Association, I hope to celebrate the first survivor. The threat will only grow larger, unless we fight back fiercely. Please consider sharing about the Alzheimer's Association as a resource to someone needing support; donating to advance the care, support, and research efforts of this organization; or participating in one of their walks. Thank you!
